Injuries are an unfortunate reality that NFL players have to deal with, and so many players around the league typically get surgery in the offseason to clean something up or at some point have to spend time rehabbing a severe knee injury, shoulder injury, concussion, etc.
One player had a much more uncommon injury last year that almost cost him his career, and he recently admitted he should have lost his sight because of it.
Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku had a career year in 2023 but nearly lost it all when he suffered severe burns to his face and arms after a bonfire accident at his home, and he said “My eyes were wide open when the whole thing happened, so I should be blind right now.”
Browns TE David Njoku could’ve been blinded after last year’s bonfire accident. He wore that memorable mask to the game to cover the burn. What’s the story behind it?

Njoku said he got the mask he wore during the games last season from Party City.
He said the accident happened in his backyard as he typically meditates around the fire but used a different type of lighter fluid in this instance that caused the fire to blow up in his face.
It looks like the accident didn’t cause any lasting damage, and it’s a blessing that it didn’t have a worse outcome.
Njoku posted career highs with 81 catches for 882 yards and six touchdowns last season despite his Browns starting five different quarterbacks, and he’ll look to hopefully put up similar big numbers this year, albeit ideally with only one quarterback throwing him the ball this time.
