The New England Patriots were able to get their first look at Drake Maye during the preseason, and the rookie quarterback had some encouraging plays that showed some optimism that he can develop into a quality starter at some point.

The Patriots took Maye third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft largely because of his arm strength and athleticism, though he was still considered to be a raw prospect.

While Maye has the physical attributes to be successful, he’s still got a long way to go as a passer as he can often times be sped up or inaccurate when forced to throw on the move.

With that in mind, head coach Jerod Mayo announced that Jacoby Brissett will be the starter for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Although it makes sense on paper to start Brissett, Chase Daniel is concerned about Maye’s development via The Athletic.

“So I think if I was a media member today in New England, I’m asking Jerod Mayo what’s your plan for development in practice for Drake Maye? That’s a big issue. Cause really these guys, I hate to say it, you cannot develop in practice. You have to play actual football games,” Daniel said.

New England’s decision may seem sound given their offensive line deficiencies but…@ChaseDaniel is worried about Drake Maye’s development, he tells @DMRussini.

Daniel is right in that the only way to truly grow as a player is to get live reps in games, so Maye will be behind the eight ball compared to some of his fellow rookies.

Protecting a young quarterback is hard to argue against, though it does mean he might not reach his potential until much later.
