Not so long ago, scouts and analysts had Malik Willis penciled in as the future of the Tennessee Titans.
A third-round pick, Willis looked like a potential steal in the NFL Draft, and his athleticism, strength, and speed were promising.
However, the Liberty product was never able to establish himself in Music City.
He lost his backup spot multiple times, and the fact that the Titans went after Will Levis last season all but proved that they weren’t sold on him anymore.
That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see that they didn’t hesitate to trade him to the Green Bay Packers.
Even so, when talking to ESPN, the 25-year-old signal-caller admitted that the trade was shocking to him:
Now, Willis will strive to be Jordan Love’s backup.
That’s not the position he hoped to be at this point in his career, and his chances of playing when Love is healthy are pretty close to zero, but he at least secured a spot on a roster, at least for the time being.
The Titans were likely going to cut him after giving Mason Rudolph the backup quarterback spot.
Perhaps Willis thought he still had a chance to take Levis’ spot if the second-year player struggled early in the season.
He did show signs of improvement and development in training camp, but he still failed to convince new head coach Brian Callahan to give him a spot on the roster.
Now, barring a major turn of events, he’ll likely go down as one of the biggest disappointments in his class.
