The New England Patriots always knew Drake Maye was far from a finished product.
But unlike some of his quarterback colleagues entering the league this season, Maye was particularly raw.
That wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as his physical tools were very impressive, and he had the potential to be one of the best in the league.
That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see them roll with Jacoby Brissett as their starter for Week One.
Nonetheless, NFL insider Jeff Howe believes it might be just a matter of time before that situation changes (via Carlos Talks Pats).
He believes Maye will take the reins of the offense at some point in the season, although he also admits that the team’s record and the way the offensive line performs could also have an impact on that decision.
#Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye will “almost certainly take over as the starter” during the season, per @jeffphowe.
The belief is New England’s “record and the line’s performance have made it a guess as to when that would happen.”

The Patriots don’t have any talent at wide receiver, and they have one of the worst offensive lines in the game.
That could make life difficult for any quarterback, and especially for a rookie, so they’re likely just protecting him by not starting him.
Even so, player development should be of the most importance in Foxboro, and that’s only going to happen by being on the field, so they might want to revisit their stance on their QB situation at some point in the season.
