The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were among the most surprising teams in the NFL last season.
They brought Baker Mayfield in to compete for the starting quarterback job, which he quickly won.
Mayfield took the team to the playoffs, nearly bringing them to the NFC Championship.
Now that the Buccaneers have proven that they have a roster that can compete with the best teams in the league, they have heightened expectations for the 2024 campaign.
As they prepare for their first opponent, the Washington Commanders, head coach Todd Bowles had some interesting things to say about them.
As shared by a fan (JayDanielsMVP) on X, Bowles said, “I think if you find yourself just facing the rookie quarterback, the other 10 guys are going to kill you, so we’re facing the Redskins… We don’t look at it as facing the rookie quarterback, we’re trying to beat the Redskins.”

This quote, of course, didn’t exactly go over well.
Bowles’ sentiment is on the right track, as teams shouldn’t focus on just one player as their focal point.
However, the Commanders haven’t been known as the “Redskins” for a few years due to the root of the team’s name.
Bowles has already received some flak for referring to the team as their old name, so it will be interesting to see if he corrects that moving forward.
Regardless of Bowles’ comments, or what name he calls the Commanders, the Buccaneers are hoping to start their season on the right foot with a win over this Washington D.C.-based team.
