The San Francisco 49ers entered the NFL offseason with two priorities.
They needed to either trade or extend Brandon Aiyuk, and they needed to appease Trent Williams’ discontent.
It took them longer than expected and desired, but they crossed both things off their list.
With that in mind, former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky took to X to react to the news of Williams’ restructured contract.
Per Orlovsky, this was a massive win not just because of the fact that he might get to play in the season opener vs. the New York Jets but also because it puts them right back at the top of the NFC with the Detroit Lions.
Absolutely massive few days for SF
See if he can go Week 1 but more importantly this brings SF back to the top of the NFC with Detroit https://t.co/cZl0fMlwXZ

Aiyuk is a very good player, and his route-running allows Deebo Samuel to find wide-open looks.
However, he was somewhat expendable.
Williams, on the other hand, was irreplaceable.
He’s the best offensive tackle in business, and the Niners’ offense failed to get anything going when he was out with an injury last season.
This is a make-or-break season for Kyle Shanahan’s team.
They’ve lost two Super Bowls and could’ve and should’ve won both.
And with the kind of talent they have on their roster, they might not be able to hold onto some of them for much longer, especially if they give Brock Purdy the world-class deal they’re reportedly going to give him.
But for the time being, they will continue to be one of the strongest teams in the NFL.
The Niners are back, and the rest of the league is in trouble.
