New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged that even though rookie No. 3 pick Drake Maye outperformed Jacoby Brissett in the team’s quarterback competition this preseason, the team still opted to go with Brissett as the starter, much to the fans’ chagrin.
Fans saw enough from Maye in camp and are excited to see him play sooner rather than later, and former Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski recently predicted when Maye will step on the field.
Gronkowski recently appeared on Up & Adams with Kay Adams and when asked about when he believes Maye will get his shot as the starter, he said “About Week 8, Week 9, Week 10, right around there.”

Adams followed up mentioning that’s how long it could take the offensive line to mesh, and Gronk acknowledged that’s certainly part of the reason why Brissett is out there in the beginning since he is a veteran and better equipped to deal with an inexperienced line.
The Pats might have one of the league’s worst offensive lines, and that much was evident in the preseason, so putting Maye in danger behind a shaky line isn’t a great idea for anybody involved.
Maye significantly outperformed Brissett in the preseason but was viewed as the QB with the most work to do among his peers in this rookie class given the fact that he is just 21 years old.
That being said, he looks much improved from even last season at North Carolina and it’s a safe bet he’ll see the field at some point.
