Veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett was named the starter in New England this preseason beating out rookie Drake Maye.

While recently speaking with the media, head coach Jerod Mayo went into why he chose Brissett to be the starter at the beginning of the season.

“Just being familiar with the offense first and foremost…He makes the right decisions and I think he gives us the best chance to win games based on his experience,” Mayo said in front of the New England media.

“He makes the right decisions and I think he gives us the best chance to win games based on his experience … hopefully we can talk about this after the game, there’s no turnovers. No INTs.”#patriots #nfl #newenglandpatriots

Brissett has been around the block as an NFL quarterback.

The 31-year-old is entering his ninth NFL season and is on his second stint with the Pats.

A former Super Bowl champion with New England in 2016 as a rookie, he knows the building and the offense, which is a big deal for Mayo.

Despite having a career record of 18-30 as a starter, Brissett has thrown 51 career touchdowns and has a career passer rating of 85.3.

The Pats made the move to go with the stable veteran to start out the year.

Now, that does not mean that the No. 3 overall pick in Drake Maye won’t play this year.

With New England not expected to do much this season, there is a chance that Maye could see a lot of the field later on in the year.

The former ACC Player of the Year has plenty of talent and is likely the future in Massachusetts.

For now, it is Brissett’s turn to see if he can surprise the NFL and win his team some games.
