After a forgettable 2023 NFL season, the Cincinnati Bengals hope to get back on track as a legitimate Super Bowl contender heading into Week 1 of the 2024 campaign against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Although there’s been a lot of optimism about the Bengals being able to right the ship with superstar quarterback Joe Burrow now healthy, Cincinnati is dealing with a concerning contract situation with star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase.
Chase, like many around the league this offseason, wants to get paid what he’s worth, especially with other star players at his position, like Justin Jefferson (Minnesota Vikings), CeeDee Lamb (Dallas Cowboys) and Brandon Aiyuk (San Francisco 49ers) recently securing lucrative long-term contract extensions.
Unlike his peers, Chase hasn’t been able to see eye-to-eye with his team on a new deal, which is very concerning for Cincinnati with the start of the season days away.
Although some have speculated this could bleed into the regular season, former Bengals defensive back Solomon Wilcots thinks Chase will get a new contract at the last minute.
“I suspect that this deal will get done. … It may be at the eleventh hour,” Wilcots said, via SiriusXM NFL Radio.

The Bengals obviously are a much better team with a motivated and healthy Chase on the field, which is a sentiment Burrow would agree with, considering his history with his former college teammate at LSU.
Cincinnati needs to do everything within its power to get a deal done before the team hosts the Patriots on Sunday, or this could become an even bigger distraction that threatens to derail the entire season.
