The St. Louis Cardinals are still not in a very good position at the moment, as they sit 12 games below the .500 mark with a record of 31-43 and are eight games back of first place in the NL Central.
However, there could be cause for some optimism after Tuesday’s 9-3 win over the Washington Nationals.
St. Louis now has won four consecutive games for the first time since mid-May and have won two straight series.
Backed by Dylan Carlson’s two-homer night, left-hander Jordan Montgomery stepped up for the Cardinals, delivering a seven-inning, one-run performance while allowing just four hits and recording six strikeouts.
On Twitter, the Cardinals celebrated Montgomery’s accomplishment after their win.

Montgomery was certainly dealing for the Cardinals on Tuesday.
St. Louis was in need of another strong performance out of their veteran left-hander.
Fortunately, Montgomery gave the Cardinals just that.
With the win, he improved to 4-7 and lowered his ERA to 3.69.
The left-hander was acquired from the New York Yankees last August in the Harrison Bader trade.
With the Cardinals still well under .500, Montgomery may be a piece that they could look to sell off at the trade deadline.
He is a free agent at the end of this season, and starting pitching is typically a hot commodity at the deadline.
However, the Cardinals have won four straight, and they may look to keep him around if they end up going on a run and getting back into contention.
But his performance last night gave the Cardinals a significant boost as they look to sweep the Nats.
