The Cleveland Browns reportedly came very close to trading for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, that deal almost came to fruition earlier this month.
“On Thursday, Aug. 1, I thought a trade to Cleveland was happening, and then it didn’t get done. … There’s never, never been a case as unpredictable as the one that has gone on this summer between the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk,” Schefter said recently on “The Pat McAfee Show,” via ESPN Cleveland.

If the Browns had been able to land Aiyuk, the case could have been made that they would have had one of the best offenses in all of football.
Aiyuk has put together back-to-back seasons with at least 1,000 yards receiving and is one of the best route-runners in the league.
Adding him to a receiver room that already has Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy is a very appetizing thought if you are a Browns fan.
With Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb (who is recovering from a knee injury sustained last season), Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku and quarterback Deshaun Watson already in the mix, it makes the thought of that trade even more intriguing.
However, the trade did not come to fruition, and there is still no resolution between Aiyuk and the 49ers in their ongoing contract dispute.
With the start of the NFL regular season fast approaching, the clock is ticking for both parties to find common ground on an extension for Aiyuk.
But as Schefter noted in his interview, this entire situation has been very unpredictable all offseason.
