The Carolina Panthers may have a rookie quarterback, but they do have some weapons around that rookie.

No. 1 overall draft pick Bryce Young is lucky to be playing with wide receivers Adam Thielen and DJ Chark, as well as running back Miles Sanders, who made the Pro Bowl last season as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Saturday, Carolina played their first preseason game of 2023 and they lost, 27-0, to the New York Jets as Thielen barely played and had just one reception for eight yards.

But Panthers beat writer Sheena Quick said on Pat McAfee’s show that Thielen has been having a great training camp because he has shown excellent leadership.

It is critical for rookie quarterbacks such as Young to have dependable wide receivers in order to help them develop and reinforce the hard work they have put in on their passing skills.

Thielen has played nine seasons in the NFL, and he has made the Pro Bowl twice while going over the 1,250-yard mark two times.

Last season, he had 716 yards and six touchdowns while serving as an excellent No. 2 wideout behind the irrepressible Justin Jefferson.

The arrival of Thielen means the Panthers may have a shot at snagging a Wild Card playoff spot in the NFC depending on how Young does in his first pro season.

On Saturday, Young completed four of six passes for 21 passing yards.

It’s way too early to declare whether Young will be a star or a bust in the NFL, but unlike most rookie QBs, he will have some help.
