Adam Wainwright Finally Gets Closer To Career Milestone

At this point, it’s pretty clear that St. Louis Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright just doesn’t have it anymore.

Of course that’s to be expected: he is 42 years old, and you just don’t see many successful 42-year-old pitchers these days.

The Cardinals want to give him a parting gift in what is his final season as an MLB player: helping him get to 200 wins.

It hasn’t been an easy road, though.

Wainwright owns the worst ERA in baseball among pitchers with at least 90 innings, at 7.95.

On Tuesday, however, he got the much-awaited W and is currently at 199.

“Adam Wainwright picked up his 199th win tonight, his first since June 17th. He had gone 11 starts without a win,” Talkin’ Baseball tweeted.

11 starts without a win is a long time and speaks loudly about his struggles (and the Cardinals’ too) on the mound.

Wainwright is now 4-11 for the season.

Will he get to 200 victories as an MLB pitcher?

That’s a mystery, but given how hard the stat has been to come by this season, it’s safe to say the odds are against him.

Still, it’s notable that he has been so good throughout his career that even despite his 7.95 ERA this year, his career mark is still a solid 3.54.

No matter what happens this season, and whether he reaches 200 wins or not, Wainwright has a place in the Cardinals Hall of Fame later down the road.

He is a three-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glover, and a Silver Slugger award winner, not to mention the fact he played his whole career in St. Louis and won two World Series.
