Surprisingly, the St. Louis Cardinals have started to play much better baseball.

They finally climbed out of last place in the NL Central after sweeping the Miami Marlins, and have won five consecutive games, including eight of their last 10.

On Monday, President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak confirmed that the team intends to sell at the trade deadline, and that any buying will be geared towards improving the team for 2024.

However, Adam Wainwright has refused to throw in the towel on this season.

On Wednesday, he discussed the Cardinals’ recent surge and why he still believes the best is yet to come for this team.

Wainwright recalled the latter part of the 2011 season, when the Cardinals were 10.5 games back in the Wild Card race in late August.

Back then, Mozeliak spoke in a similar tone to Monday.

Wainwright, however, who was recovering from Tommy John surgery at the time, preached confidence and said that the team wouldn’t quit despite their deficit.

St. Louis went on to pull off a historic comeback and win their 11th World Series title.

Wainwright says that the comeback empowered him to believe in his team.

The veteran right-hander joked that he had a problem with belief, one that keeps him optimistic even in the most trying times.

He then praised the starting rotation for their solid work in recent games and reiterated that he still carries the same belief with him.

Wainwright said that the only thing missing now is “this old guy,” jokingly referring to himself.
