After Phil Jackson retired following his stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs arguably took on the distinction as the best head coach in the NBA, as he had similar success with his team and throughout his coaching career.
With Popovich being in a downward spiral ever since Tim Duncan called it a career, the Spurs haven’t been relevant until the team drafted Victor Wembanyama, but it’s been the same sad situation in San Antonio with the storied franchise continuing to struggle.
Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors, who learned all he could from Jackson and Popovich, was the best head coach in the league, with Stephen Curry and company firing on all cylinders until things came to a halt over the last two years.
Now, the distinction of the best head coach in the league arguably goes to Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, who has been as consistent as they come ever since he took over as the leader on the sideline in South Beach.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski referred to Spoelstra as the league’s best head coach when recently reporting the Heat coming to terms with the legendary head coach on a lucrative contract extension, via NBA on ESPN.

As Wojnarowski points out, Spoelstra has proved his worth by successfully coaching the Heat in several different situations, from a championship team to a rebuilding squad.
There’s simply no coach in the league that comes close to what Spoelstra has been able to do on a consistent basis in the NBA, and as a result, he’s deserving of every penny of the $120 million extension he just signed.
