Washington Wizards No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr has gotten off to a troubling start in Summer League and has missed 20 of his 21 shot attempts over the last two games, though he has shown off some impressive defensive instincts and moves around with a fluidity you don’t often see from someone who is 7’1″.
As the most recent Frenchman to join the NBA alongside No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher, Sarr shared a strong belief about France’s place in the NBA.
According to ESPN and ClutchPoints, Sarr said “I think France can be really a powerhouse for NBA players and it’s gonna keep growing over the years.”

It’s hard to disagree with him even though he and Risacher have been heavily criticized for headlining what many believe is the worst draft class in recent history.
The Charlotte Hornets also took a French player high in the 2024 draft when they took Tidjane Salaun with the sixth overall pick.
Last year, the San Antonio Spurs of course made Victor Wembanyama the first overall pick, and he ran away with the Rookie of the Year award en route to establishing himself as potentially the future best player in the league, while his French teammate Bilal Coulibaly was selected seventh overall.
Rudy Gobert just won his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award for the Minnesota Timberwolves and helped lead them to the Western Conference Finals for just the second time in franchise history, so Sarr’s take is not a hot one as French players are dominating all over the world.
