The NBA has come a long way since the old days, for better or worse.

Some argue that there’s more talent in today’s game than there has ever been, and they might be right.

Others aren’t fond of the way the game is played and officiated, mostly due to the high-scoring games and the lack of defense.

To each his own, and that’s just a matter of taste.

Nonetheless, what seems to be a fact is that today’s players don’t seem to have that competitive fire within them anymore.

Load management was something players back in the day simply couldn’t fathom, and that included Allen Iverson.

The Philadelphia 76ers legend was asked his thoughts about load management and whether he would embrace it.

He jokingly stated that he could sit out of practice, but there was no way he was going to sit out of a game (via Derek Bodner).

Allen Iverson was asked whether he would embrace load management.

“Yeah right…Just sitting out of a game? I can sit out of practice. Play me in the game.”

Of course, he was referring to his iconic ‘we’re talking about practice’ rant, but he makes a valid point.

Back in the day, stars played as often as possible, and they still managed to have long and successful careers.

It’s not like all players are having 20+ year careers like LeBron James, so load management doesn’t seem to translate into fewer injuries or a longer career.

If anything, the game was more physical years ago, and offensive stars had to withstand a beating every time they drove to the lane, yet they continued to play whenever they were healthy enough to play.
