After the San Francisco 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, they decided to make a major change at defensive coordinator.
Despite helping lead the team to the big game in Year 1 as the DC, the organization parted ways with Steve Wilks.
Now, one of the best defenses in the league has an opening in their coordinator role, a position that is likely viewed as incredibly valuable for eligible candidates.
Many have suggested that Bill Belichick’s experience would make him the best fit for this role, but others have pointed to a different veteran coach.
Announcer Greg Papar recently appeared on the Rich Eisen show, where he listed Pete Carroll as “a natural fit.”
“I think [former Seattle Seahawks coach] Pete Carroll would be more of a natural fit,” Papa said.

He indicated that Kyle Shanahan’s scheme has been modeled from what Carroll has created, and if he were to join the staff, he could fit seamlessly into this defense.
The 49ers did have one of the best defenses in the league last year, and adding someone like Carroll or Belichick could help bring this team to the next level.
It will be interesting to see what DC the 49ers go with, especially since they were close to winning the Super Bowl this year.
They have to be confident in their team’s abilities seeing how far they went in 2023, but that also might make them more picky in their selection.
Shanahan is a well respected head coach, so whoever the team ends up going with, he will likely have a say in who the next DC is
