The Memphis Grizzlies gave up two first-round picks to get their hands on Marcus Smart.

And while that might seem like a big price to pay for a guy who’s not likely to be a starter for them, it might as well be just what they needed to get to the next level.

At least, that’s what former NBA player Jay Williams seems to think about this move, raving about how great he could be for the team’s culture going forward.

Williams cites that every young player in the league needs a big brother that can hold him accountable and teach him the ropes and ins and outs of being an NBA player.

He says that the Grizzlies needed to find someone who could look Ja Morant in the eye and hold him accountable, a guy that Morant actually respected and listened to.

Reports state that Steven Adams tried to be that guy last season but to no avail, but you better believe that Smart won’t hesitate to get in his face and call him out as early and often as possible.

Smart is a culture guy and a hype guy, and the young Grizzlies most definitely needed that.

They’ve done a lot of talking despite not winning anything, and Smart will make sure they stay in line and do some winning before all the spitting.

Also, with Morant set to miss at least one quarter of the season with an injury, they couldn’t have found a more suitable replacement for that gritty and physical team.
