The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2023 season with high expectations.

They were coming off an NFC Championship berth, a game the 49ers thought they should have won with a healthy quarterback.

It appeared that the 49ers were bound for another deep playoff run based on their undefeated five-game winning streak at the beginning of the year.

However, while they might have started the year strong, their current three-game losing streak has caused significant concerns.

Analysts have pointed to a myriad of differing explanations for their recent woes in trying to pinpoint the problem.

Emmanuel Acho recently talked about Steve Wilks, the 49ers’ defensive coordinator as a potential contributing factor.

“They have a Steve Wilks problem,” Acho said.

The 49ers have developed one of the NFL’s best defenses over the past several years.

When they have faced offensive struggles, their elite defense has helped pull them out of the mud, often winning them games.

However, in their latest loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Acho put a lot of blame on Wilks’ scheme.

“The Niners are only pressuring 15.9% of the time,” Acho said, adding, “The structure of Steve Wilks does not fit this defense.”

Acho believes that, based on Wilks’ experience as a defensive backs coach, he does not think like a linebacker.

In his mind, this is the biggest obstacle for the 49ers to overcome at the moment.

If they do not put pressure on opposing quarterbacks, they put themselves at a disadvantage, especially against some of the league’s best at the position.
