The Kansas City Chiefs had to head into the 2023 NFL season without arguably their best defensive player due to a contract dispute, with star defensive tackle Chris Jones wanting to get paid more for this season and beyond.

Jones was so adamant about reworking his contract after having the first All-Pro season of his career that he was willing to sit out games and deal with all the fines that would be sent his way.

After missing Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, which resulted in the first loss of the 2023 campaign for the Chiefs, Jones agreed to a reworked one-year deal with the team, which was a little confusing, considering most believed he was negotiating a long-term deal.

It seems as though the Chiefs came out on top in these contract negotiations, with Jones playing for incentives added to his base salary of $19.5 million, which would potentially push his number to $25.1 million.

On his show, Craig Carton of FOX Sports said he believes Jones is a talented football player but not all that savvy in terms of the business.

“I think Chris Jones is a great football player who’s an idiot.”

With the Chiefs and Jones content, the defending Super Bowl champions can get back to work without any off-the-field distractions, but it will be interesting to see if the star defensive tackle regrets holding out for what doesn’t seem like a great deal with Kansas City.

Only time will tell how things pan out for Jones in Kansas City, as he may ultimately discover that he was duped, but in the meantime, the Chiefs will be focusing on doing everything within their power to repeat as Super Bowl champions and take a step closer to being an NFL dynasty.
