There are a couple of reasons why the San Francisco 49ers drafted Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with the 31st overall draft pick in the NFL Draft.

One of them is that there is plenty of uncertainty surrounding the contract situation of All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

With the 1,000-yard wide receiver looking for a major extension, San Francisco made the decision to protect themselves by drafting his replacement.

He is a very similar player to Aiyuk.

NFL analyst Greg Cosell recently chatted on the Ross Tucker Podcast about how Pearsall could replace Aiyuk if he were to be traded to another team.

“I liked Pearsall coming out. I would think he is more in line of an Aiyuk type. He’s bigger than you think…He’s got good speed. I like Pearsall’s tape a lot coming out of Florida,” Cosell said.

If the 49ers are hoping to replace Aiyuk, it seems as though Pearsall is the right guy to have in the building.

Like Aiyuk, Pearsall stands above six feet and weighs around 200 pounds.

He is even faster than Aiyuk and can separate from defenders with ease.

The former first-round wide receiver in Aiyuk has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons each of the last two seasons.

It is hard to say if Pearsall could put up those kinds of numbers right away with the likes of George Kittle and Deebo Samuel there.

But, if San Francisco finds a way to keep Aiyuk around, their wide receiver core will be even more talented.
