The 2023 NBA Draft was one of the most anticipated in recent history.
Victor Wembanyama was viewed as the top prospect by a significant margin, and the San Antonio Spurs secured the No. 1 overall pick via the draft lottery.
This was an important day for the Spurs, as Wembanyama represented a potential turning point within the organization.
The Spurs had struggled to gain traction for a few years, but Wembayama was supposed to help them take a massive leap.
They didn’t necessarily find the success they hoped for in the 2023-2024 season, but that could all turn around heading into the new year.
With two first-round picks in this draft, the Spurs had an opportunity to add two top-tier players to their roster alongside Wembanyama.
While they ended up trading the No. 8 overall pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves, they did select Stephon Castle with the No. 4 overall pick.
Castle was a highly regarded prospect, and some had him as the best player in the draft class.
He has been given a lot of praise to this point, and as NBA Central pointed out on Twitter, Jay Bilas said Castle “could be a bigger Jrue Holiday.”

Holiday, of course, is known as an elite defender who can contribute to a team in many different ways.
The Spurs started building something great last year, and if Castle can live up to the hype, they could potentially put together a winning season in 2024, bringing themselves from their status as a bottom-feeder team.
