The St. Louis Cardinals continue to find themselves in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Just when it appeared that things couldn’t get any worse, the opposite happened.

The latest development is one surrounding Nolan Arenado.

A recent report from Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Cardinals had been discussing a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers surrounding the star third baseman.

However, after another excruciating loss, things got worse, as Arenado revealed to the media that he hadn’t heard the reports of such discussions.

On Twitter, Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch commented on the front office’s latest misstep.

If #STLCards are not trading Nolan Arenado, they are handling it very poorly. Front office has ghosted, leaving Arenado to speak on reports and rumors tonight after game. He initially declined, then came back and talked. He’s a pro, but he’s frustrated. Bad spot for him to be in.

As Frederickson notes, if the Cardinals truly don’t intend to trade Arenado, as they have indicated, then the front office has certainly handled this situation very poorly.

Arenado opted into the remainder of his contract during the offseason, yet the Cardinals’ only supplement was the signing of Willson Contreras.

The star third baseman learned of these reports from the media and was left to answer questions about the rumors.

It still appears unlikely that St. Louis will actually trade the star third baseman, as the front office has indicated that they do not plan on initiating a rebuild.

However, the messaging has not been clear from President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak, and it has all led to this, with Cardinals fans now holding their breaths, hoping Arenado won’t be traded.

St. Louis enters play on Saturday 10.5 games back in the Wild Card race with a record of 46-59.
