When the San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they took a huge risk.

Lance played at North Dakota State University.

While this same university produced Carson Wentz, Lance had a very different profile heading into the NFL.

As Sam Monson of PFF has recently highlighted, Lance has only attempted 102 passes in the regular season.

This is more than he attempted in high school and slightly less than he attempted during his collegiate career.

Trey Lance needs playing time.

There’s no pathway for him to get it.

99 HS pass attempts.
318 College pass attempts.
72 NFL preseason attempts
102 NFL regular season attempts.

In his ENTIRE FOOTBALL CAREER, he has fewer pass attempts than Geno Smith had just last year.

Now, Lance faces a difficult path for the 49ers’ starting role, especially considering he’s coming off of major surgery.

He has struggled throughout training camp, and Brock Purdy is slated to be the team’s starter as a result.

Monson believes the only way for Lance to get another chance is to join either the XFL or USFL.

Without that experience and increased reps, he doesn’t think Lance can succeed in the NFL, especially as a starting QB.

Monson also points out that in Lance’s entire football career, he has fewer pass attempts than Geno Smith had last season.

Will Lance ever get an opportunity to be an NFL starter, knowing his current situation?

There are several variables at play for Lance with the 49ers.

Alongside Purdy, Sam Darnold was also brought in during the offseason and is said to be competing for the QB2 role.

Again, this limits Lance’s upside for the 2023 season, giving more ammunition for analysts like Monson to doubt him.
