The New England Patriots recently made a surprising move, releasing James Robinson in the middle of the offseason.

Robinson was recently signed to a two-year, $4 million contract before being released.

While many fans were initially surprised by this sudden move, NFL analyst Jeff Howe detailed a potential explanation.

According to Howe, Robinson’s injuries were ultimately too big of a risk for the team, resulting in less on-field action.

A little more context on the Patriots’ release of James Robinson: Injuries were the issue, and the veteran RB couldn’t stay on the field, per source.

Robinson broke onto the NFL scene in 2020, having a 1,070-yard season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This surprised many, considering Robinson was an undrafted free agent but found great success.

He followed up that campaign with 767 yards in 2021 before tearing his Achilles in the latter half of the season.

In 2022, Robinson played in seven games for the Jaguars before being traded to the New York Jets.

He was a replacement for Breece Hall, who tore his ACL mid-season but was ultimately released when the season concluded.

Now that he’s been cut by the Patriots, Robinson is in search of a new home, hoping to make his impact felt on an offense.

While running back depth in the NFL is certainly important, Robinson’s injury history could be a cause for trepidation for a prospective team.

Robinson will be 25 years-old to begin the 2023 NFL season.

Will he get picked up by a running back-needy team before the season begins?

Or, will Robinson have to wait until the season begins, hoping that a team is in need of his services for a potential playoff push?
