The 49-55 New York Mets are in a really uncomfortable spot before the deadline.
Any other team with that record would sell with no hesitation, but the Mets won 100 games last year and spent millions of dollars in the offseason because they wanted to win the World Series.
A sale would be hard to explain to fans, but a path to contention is highly unlikely at this point.
The Mets have already traded closer David Robertson and ace Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander could potentially be next.
Still, the team is not conducting a fire sale in which everyone is available.
Fantasy baseball analyst DJ Short analyzed the organization’s approach at the deadline and the days prior.
“The Mets aren’t rebuilding or conducting a fire sale. They are trading players on short-term deals (very movable) for players who can help down the road/allow the Mets to be flexible in future trades. It would be more worrisome if we weren’t sure Steve Cohen will spend. He will,” he tweeted.

So far, the Mets have done just that: they have dealt veterans on very short-term contracts, and have gotten excellent prospects in return.
For Robertson, the Mets obtained infielder Marco Vargas and catcher Ronald Hernandez.
Both are very young but their ceilings are extremely high and are highly regarded in prospect circles.
They could develop into future big leaguers for the Mets or be part of trades that can help the team contend next year.
For Scherzer, the Mets got Luisangel Acuna, Ronald’s brother.
Acuna is not quite as talented as his MVP-candidate brother, but he is a very solid prospect in his own right.
The Mets have done well at the deadline, given the circumstances.
