Over a long 162-game MLB season it is unrealistic for a team to be playing their best all season.
For the Philadelphia Phillies, it just so happened that they started the year slow.
Maybe it was due to their extended run in the postseason and their crushing loss in the World Series.
But, they were not playing like a true contender over the first few months.
Yet since the beginning of June, the Phillies have been playing like a playoff team.
According to Jared Carrabis, the Phillies were seven games under .500 on June 2.
Since then they have won 26 of 36 and find themselves a season-high nine games over .500.
The Phillies were a season worst 7 games under .500 on June 2. They’ve since won 26 of 36 to move to a season high 9 games over .500 at 51-42. Only the Braves have a better record in the majors over that span. Their playoff odds coming into today are up to 69.4% per FanGraphs.

With their 51-42 record, the Phillies are still 10.5 games out of first place in the NL East.
It seems like the Phillies’ path to the playoffs will once again be via the Wild Card.
They showed last year all you need to do is get into the postseason and you have a chance.
It will be interesting to see what moves the Phillies make at the trade deadline.
The deadline is August 1 and there are a few different ways the Phillies could improve.
One spot will be by adding more pitching.
You can never have enough pitching in baseball and they should look at both starters and relievers.
The Phillies have not been shy to add a few rental players over the past few years.
If they want to compete with the best teams in the leagues in the playoffs that is something they must do.
