The Los Angeles Lakers appeared to be zeroing in on ESPN analyst and former NBA shooting guard JJ Redick to become their next head coach before a bombshell report came out that named UConn’s Dan Hurley as their preferred target.
The Hurley news came out of nowhere as the Lakers were never linked to him previously, though the two sides reportedly made contact and met this past weekend to go over contract details and what a partnership might look like.
Hurley is considered the best men’s basketball coach in college today after leading the Huskies to back-to-back NCAA titles and seemed poised to return to UConn for a chance at a “three-peat.”
However, Los Angeles appears deadset on bringing him in as they’ve reportedly offered him a massive guaranteed deal in excess of $100 million.
That type of money would be hard for any individual to turn down, and Hurley is reportedly remaining open-minded to the possibility of making the jump to the NBA.
Despite the massive deal on the table, people like David Pingalore don’t believe Hurley will ultimately take it via his personal Twitter account.
“I do not think he is the Lakers’ next head coach,” Pingalore said.
It seems the @UConnMBB head Coach Dan Hurley has come and gone to LA to meet with the @lakers front office. Hold on because something isn’t adding up as I point on @KTLA last night with Ping’s Point. #lakers #lakersnation #billyjoel #staytuned #lebronjames @lebronjames pic.twitter.com/gzm9TnlLJ5

Pingalore points out that Hurley was present for a Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday after meeting with Los Angeles, a sign that some interpreted as him staying on the east coast.
However, it’s not really conclusive evidence of his decision and it’s widely expected that he won’t have one until later this week after meeting with the UConn brass and his players.
