Chicago Bears No. 1 pick Caleb Williams had an outstanding preseason debut on Saturday, going 4-for-7 for 96 yards and showing off the jaw-dropping arm talent and improvisation abilities that made him the no-brainer first overall pick this year.
There’s no question about his ability, but one analyst is pointing to a different area when it comes to the biggest question about Caleb heading into his rookie year.
ESPN’s Matt Bowen appeared on the Come Get Some show and when asked about what Williams’ biggest question mark is at the moment, said “The next step for him is, can he consistently play on time? Can he consistently play within rhythm?”

Bowen added that if he was coaching Caleb Williams, he’d want him to be himself and do all the creative things that make him great, but noted that the biggest challenge with him will be if he can play on time by completing passes quickly and manipulate the defense with his eyes.
It’s a fair point, as fans fell in love with Williams due to his freelancing ability at USC which led to plenty of comparisons to Patrick Mahomes, but it was rare to see him play traditionally and stay in the pocket, get the ball out quickly, and take the safe route.
Much of that could have been due to circumstance since USC’s offensive line wasn’t great, nor were his receivers, but nothing we saw in his debut indicated that any of this would be a huge issue for him.
He has only thrown seven passes, but that’s all it takes to reignite the hype train.
