The Ringer’s Danny Kelly is not buying the hype surrounding one quarterback prospect before the 2024 NFL Draft.
FanDuel TV posted to Twitter a clip of Kelly discussing the media buildup of J.J. McCarthy, especially comparisons of the former Michigan quarterback to current Buffalo Bills signal-caller Josh Allen.
Kelly does not see those comparisons as accurate for McCarthy.
“I just don’t know if he has that elite ceiling that the other guys in his class do,” Kelly said about McCarthy.

With all of the hype, Kelly is beginning to compare McCarthy’s pre-draft love with that of another NFL quarterback.
The comparison, however, is not flattering.
“This is what we did with Zach Wilson,” Kelly said.
Wilson – who’s career record a starter is 12-21 – is widely viewed as a NFL draft bust after being selected with the second-overall pick in 2021.
The analyst was not completely dismissive of McCarthy’s potential, however.
Kelly noted that McCarthy should become a “pretty good” NFL starting quarterback.
McCarthy will enter the NFL after leading Michigan to its first NCAA title since the 1990s.
He was 36-2 as a Wolverines starter and a 2023 finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award last season.
In 2023, McCarthy completed over 72% of his throws for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns.
McCarthy entered the NFL Draft after his junior year, leaving the Wolverine program at the same time as his former coach – and new Los Angeles Chargers head man – Jim Harbaugh.
Mock drafts have McCarthy going as early as No. 12 to the Denver Broncos.
