Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is squarely in the MVP discussion for this season but hasn’t looked nearly as good as he did a year ago.
His numbers have been effectively stagnant relative to how he played in 2022, and he already has almost twice as many turnovers as he did this past season.
Some of that could be attributed to the loss of the offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, or perhaps defenses have figured out how to defend Hurts.
But NFL analyst Greg Cosell thinks there’s a different issue with the Eagles quarterback: His decision-making.
“Hurts is leaving a lot of throws on the field,” Cosell said on the Ross Tucker Podcast this week, “… he is leaving the pocket prematurely …”

While this may be the case from a game tape perspective, Hurts’ seasonal production is almost identical to how his 2022 season ended.
Hurts’ completion percentage is currently identical between the two seasons (66.5 percent), and his passing yards per game are nearly the same (246.7 in 2022 vs. 249.6 in 2023).
What this really means is that while Hurts isn’t necessarily playing worse, he could be playing even better given the offensive play calling from offensive coordinator Brian Johnson.
But none of this really matters if the Eagles continue to win, and Hurts has been a big part of that.
He’s led a league-high four game-winning drives in big moments this season, specifically in two overtime games (against the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Commanders) and over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Eagles need Hurts at his best, and it looks as if there are still areas he can improve in the final five games of the season.
