You have to be tough if you want to make it in the NFL, especially if you’re a coach.
That’s how many guys, including Tom Coughlin, managed to stay there for so long.
If you don’t take our word for it, just listen to what former Jacksonville Jaguars head of athletic training Mike Ryan had to say.
Talking on the Ross Tucker Podcast, he told the story of the time coach Coughlin actually cut a player mid-practice.
Evidently Tom Coughlin cut a player mid-practice while he was coach of the Jaguars.

Apparently, a couple of players got into a fight during practice.
The coach broke the fight up, but one of them got into a scuffle again on the next play.
When Coughlin threw his helmet down the field, he told him to go get it. The player refused. Coughlin then screamed at him and he went and brought it back. He then told a scout to get him off the field.
That’s how things used to be back in the day.
Now, the players threaten not to play to get a new contract, even if they’re just a couple of years into the said contract, just because another player is getting more money than them.
The old ways are the old ways, and the players have changed a lot ever since.
That might be one of the reasons why Bill Belichick failed to land a job or why the Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with Josh McDaniels, who seemingly took a page from his book.
Of course, there’s also no chance that Coughlin would’ve cut that unnamed player if he had been a star, but still, things have changed plenty in the National Football League.
