Quarterbacks are the main focus of preseason, primarily the rookies since it’s the first time fans get to lay eyes on the players who will hopefully be the leaders of their favorite teams for the next decade or more.
One renowned analyst revealed who the most efficient quarterbacks of the first week of preseason games were, and a couple of high-profile rookies are at the top of the list.
Analyst Warren Sharp shared the list of all quarterbacks who threw at least seven passes ranked by EPA (expected points added) per dropback, and Chicago Bears No. 1 pick Caleb Williams is by far the highest on the list at 0.97 EPA, followed by Joe Burrow at 0.62 and Minnesota Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy at 0.57.

Fellow rookies Michael Penix and Spencer Rattler were below 0 on this list, which shows that the list doesn’t provide all the necessary context to evaluate performance since Penix had a strong debut throwing the ball and Rattler also led a game-winning drive in his debut for the New Orleans Saints.
Williams was outstanding and looked like he is certainly ready for Week 1 after completing 4-of-7 passes for 96 yards and flashing jaw-dropping ability that the Bears have never had at the QB position.
McCarthy saw extended time and threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns in the Minnesota Vikings’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
So far, this rookie class looks incredibly fun even though it has only been one week of preseason action.
We can’t wait to see more of them next week.
