The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a huge blow earlier this week when Dan Hurley of UConn rejected their offer to be the next head coach.

Since then, the Lakers have gone back to the drawing board and have restarted their search for a replacement for Darvin Ham.

This entire situation hasn’t looked good for the Lakers, according to Ben Golliver.

Speaking to Jim Rome, Golliver said that whoever is hired by LA will look “like the backup plan.”

The Lakers are hard at work finding their new head coach and are currently looking at James Borrego, JJ Redick, and a few other candidates.

But no matter who LA goes with, there is no denying that they won’t be their first choice.

They wanted Hurley for the position and they offered him a hefty contract, but it just wasn’t enough to convince him to move his family across the country.

Golliver spoke about that, saying that Hurley knew he would get more confidence and support from the organization at UConn.

That was a major reason why he didn’t take the Lakers job.

All is not lost for the Lakers and they could still sign a worthy candidate to lead the team into the future.

But they are asking for a lot with this new coach: they want someone who will not only help the team find success as soon as possible, but they also wish to have someone who will be around for years to come.

They wish to find a coach who will push the Lakers into their next chapter and remain for more than just a couple of seasons.

They envisioned Hurley being that coach but now they are having to adjust their plans.
