Unexpectedly, the Boston Celtics made a lot of headlines on Wednesday ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft on Thursday, with the team reportedly in deep trade talks to acquire star forward Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team deal with the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers.
If the Celtics are able to pull off this trade for Porzingis, it will have a considerable impact on what the team can do moving forward regarding its current squad and NBA free agency next month.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, bringing in Porzings would likely mean the team will move on from Grant Williams.
According to multiple league sources, the completion of the Porzingis deal would likely mean that Grant Williams’s time in Boston has come to an end.

With Porzingis being a considerable upgrade over Williams, this would be a move in the right direction for the Celtics, even though it is costly, with $36 million added to the payroll and a contract extension set to come for the Boston newcomer.
As for Williams, the Celtics can decline his $4.3 team option for next season, making him an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team next month.
The most significant risk the Celtics have moving forward is the fact they’ll have to lean on the trio of Brown, Tatum, and Porzingis for the foreseeable future without much wiggle room due to the three lucrative contracts they’ll have.
However, it is a move to address winning now rather than taking a step back, and if Porzingis can stay healthy and productive, it might be the right move and what’s needed to get to the next level and win a title in Boston.
