If the Boston Celtics win the 2023–24 NBA Finals, it’ll be because of the hard work of their players and coaching staff.
However, there is no doubt that the team has had some good luck over the years and has capitalized on the poor choices of other front offices.
Speaking on his show, Craig Carton said that the Celtics owe a lot to the mismanagement of the Philadelphia 76ers.
He pointed out that the 76ers traded Jrue Holiday to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2013 for Nerlens Noel and Elfrid Payton.
Following that, they selected Ben Simmons over Jaylen Brown in the 2016 NBA Draft and then picked Markelle Fultz over Jayson Tatum in 2017.
Carton says that the Celtics wouldn’t be the team they are today if it weren’t for the bad decisions of the Sixers.

Today, Holiday, Brown, and Tatum are three of the most important players for the Celtics.
There are other great players on the team, of course, such as Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White, and others, but this trio is perhaps the most vital for Boston.
Over the last few years, the Celtics have been run by mastermind Brad Stevens, who has been very smart with the choices he made.
He has crafted a core group of players and added some very important assets via trades.
The addition of Holiday, White, and Porzingis are three examples of Stevens understanding the league and what his team needed.
The 76ers made the decisions they did because they thought they were laying the groundwork for a strong future.
They told fans to “trust the process” and believe in their vision but it didn’t work out as expected.
Meanwhile, the Celtics were patiently waiting and creating a plan that panned out very well.
