Throughout the course of history, the Charlotte Hornets have swung and missed on several potential stars.
Now, they have a very talented young point guard in LaMelo Ball, who was a very polarizing player entering the league, but has proven to be very good at putting up numbers when healthy.
However, he’s rarely healthy, and those numbers have rarely translated into winning basketball.
Considering that, NBA analyst Tim McMahon expressed his concerns and doubts about whether Ball could be a franchise player on a winning team (via Hornets Reddit & NBA Central).
Tim MacMahon questions if LaMelo can be a franchise player, calling his game “empty calories.”
“His efficiency is garbage. His defense is horrific. And I don’t see a lot of evidence that the guy considers winning to be a priority.”

For starters, he believes his numbers are just ’empty calories’ because his efficiency is ‘garbage.’
He stated that his defense was also horrible, and perhaps the most worrisome part of all of this is the fact that winning doesn’t seem to be a priority for him, either.
Truth be told, it’s hard to argue with any of his statements.
Ball can be a three-level scorer, although he’s not particularly efficient.
He’s going to hand out assists, but he’ll also turn the ball over at a high rate.
He doesn’t even seem to try on defense, and his off-court behavior, antics, and overall demeanor are concerning, to say the least.
Add his injury-proneness to the mix, and he might not be the player the Hornets need to re-tool and rebuild for the future.
Perhaps, they’d be better off trying to find him a trade suitor and use those assets to build their team around Brandon Miller, who seems determined to be a winner.
