Analyst Says 1 Offseason Move Made The Cowboys A Worse Team

The Dallas Cowboys have had possibly the quietest offseason of any team in the NFL, even after owner Jerry Jones said that the team was going all-in.

Dallas has lost much more than it has gained in free agency, signing only LB Eric Kendricks to a one-year deal, while losing foundational pieces such as Tyler Biadasz, Tony Pollard, Dorance Armstrong, and other key members of the team.

The one move that hurt the most, according to David Helman of the NFL on FOX Podcast, was losing left tackle Tyron Smith to the New York Jets on a one-year deal, saying it was the “first move of the Cowboys offseason that makes them a worse team in 2024.”

Helman acknowledged that due to the team’s cap situation, it was clear that some of the other guys who left had no chance of being retained, but that Smith’s contract would have been easy for the Cowboys to stomach.

Smith received just a $6.5 million deal with another $13.5 million to potentially be earned through playing time and other incentives.

Unless the Cowboys bring in a free agent or make a splash in the draft, they are looking at Tyler Smith to replace Tyron at left tackle protecting Dak Prescott’s blind side.

Tyron was great in 2023, having his healthiest season in five years and doing an excellent job once again protecting his quarterback.

Tyler Smith was an All-Pro at left guard in 2023, and with such a deep crop of talent at left tackle, the Cowboys might be better off keeping their left guard where he is most comfortable and snagging a rookie with the 24th pick.
