The San Francisco 49ers have an opening at defensive coordinator after firing Steve Wilks on Wednesday.
They had the best defense in the NFL last year, but this year, some cracks were evident, especially during the playoffs, which culminated in a devastating loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Podcaster John Middlekauff said that if it were up to him, Bill Belichick would be his “first call” to replace Wilks, per The Volume.

Belichick, of course, just ended a stellar 24-year tenure as the New England Patriots’ head coach, during which he guided the franchise to six Super Bowl championships.
Middlekauff cited the good relationship Belichick has with not only 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, but also his father, Mike Shanahan, who won back-to-back world titles as the Denver Broncos’ head coach and another as the Niners’ offensive coordinator.
One has to wonder why Belichick would accept a lesser role after serving as an NFL head coach for so many years, especially after he had been New England’s de facto general manager.
However, his reputation as a defensive mastermind is a sterling one, and when New England won it all, they had one of football’s best defenses.
The 49ers have had an identity as a team that wins with defense ever since the younger Shanahan became their head coach in 2017, and getting back to having an airtight defense will be a big key to them finally getting over the hump and winning it all.
