The New England Patriots need to get things right with Drake Maye.

They can’t afford for him to be another Mac Jones.

And even though they had plenty to do with Mac Jones’ development — or lack thereof — they also need to do everything in their power to have him ready to take the field.

That’s why the fans might not want to hear what Michael Holley had to say about Maye.

Talking on NBC Sports Boston, he argued that Maye looked like the ghost of Mac Jones at a recent practice.

.@MichaelSHolley on Drake Maye at Day 1 of padded practices: “I saw the ghost of Mac Jones. Not Mac Jones facing off against Tom Brady as a rookie. We’re talking Mac Jones in Dallas in that awful game [last year]” pic.twitter.com/Z6afW1hfmH

He stated that it wasn’t the promising Mac Jones who held his own vs. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the Mac Jones that struggled mightily vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Holley claimed that Maye couldn’t get anything right, holding onto the ball when he didn’t have to, and scrambling and getting rid of it when he didn’t have to.

At the end of the day, the Patriots always knew that Maye was a work in progress and a bit of a project, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Also, for the most part, reports about him and his improvement have been positive.

The Patriots will roll with Jacoby Brissett to start the season — and perhaps for the entire season — because they know that their prospect is far from ready.

And, given the way things ended up with Jones, they must be wary not to make the same mistake and rush him into the fire until he’s actually ready.
