The New York Knicks need to start building Jalen Brunson a statue right now.
The Villanova product just made an unprecedented financial decision, making a sacrifice no other professional athlete had even come close to making.
Brunson signed a contract extension right now, even though it didn’t make sense for him, money-wise.
He could’ve gotten an additional $113 million if he had decided to sign that extension next offseason, but leaving that kind of money on the table will give the Knicks the salary cap flexibility to stay competitive.
That’s why sports analyst Harry Douglas tipped his hat to Brunson, stating that he deserved all the respect in the world, as this move will now give the Knicks plenty of flexibility (via Freddie and Harry).

Of course, it’s not like Brunson won’t benefit from this agreement, as he’s most definitely going to have a major payday once his contract runs out.
Then again, anything can happen in the future, and players rarely make this kind of decision thinking about five years from now.
God forbid, Brunson could get hurt, Tom Thibodeau could get fired, Leon Rose could be out of there, and he could get on bad terms with any of his teammates/friends or anything.
Brunson’s decision is remarkable and admirable and is the kind of attitude one would love to see from other competitors as well.
They’re still getting, literally, hundreds of millions of dollars to play basketball, so they might as well make sure to be in the best possible position to actually win at the highest level.
