When it comes to great scoring seasons in the NBA, Wilt Chamberlain’s 1961-62 season stands out the most, as he averaged a record 50.4 points a game while producing 100 points on one fateful night.

In more modern times, Michael Jordan in the 1986-87 season and Kobe Bryant in the 2005-06 campaign were also the stuff of legend in terms of scoring brilliance.

But after Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid scored 70 points in a 133-123 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, he’s averaging 36.1 points per contest this season, and Zach Lowe said he could be “producing, what is on track to be, maybe the greatest scoring season in the history of the sport,” per NBA on ESPN.

A few years ago, Embiid was a great player, but some also criticized him for not playing to his strengths and also for not being diligent enough about taking care of his body.

But over the last couple of years, he has gone from great to dominant, and last season, he was rewarded with his first regular-season MVP award.

He’s on track to lead the NBA in scoring for a third consecutive season, something very few people have ever done, and his Sixers are threatening to overtake the Milwaukee Bucks for second place in the Eastern Conference.

However, the one knock that remains for Embiid is his history of underperforming in the playoffs and the fact that he has yet to reach the Eastern Conference Finals.

With Milwaukee struggling defensively and deciding to fire Adrian Griffin as their head coach, this could be the year that Embiid takes Philly farther than they have gone in the playoffs in decades.
