The National Football League has come a long way.

Throughout the course of history, the passing game has become the most prominent way to attack opposing defenses.

They’ve abandoned the run and will more often than throw a quick pass behind the line of scrimmage instead of just handing it off to the running back.

That might be a big mistake, at least according to Warren Sharp.

In his latest appearance on the Ross Tucker Podcast, the renowned analyst and stats enthusiast talked about those kinds of plays actually being less efficient than just drawing up a running play.

He explained that even though he’s a pass-first kind of guy, offensive coordinators need to come up with better ideas or different ways to attack the opposing offense, as passes behind the line of scrimmage just haven’t been efficient enough to justify being deployed as often as they do.

This recent boom in the passing game has opened up the door for offensive coordinators to get a little more creative with their trick plays or their no-huddle offense.

Still, the fundamentals are the fundamentals, and running the football has been efficient and effective since the dawn of the game.

New rules will continue to favor the passing game because of the uptick in scoring, which is what the league wants.

Even so, it shouldn’t take long before defenses also adapt accordingly, and the offenses will have to reinvent themselves again, leading to yet another revolution in the game.
