The 2023 season has been the usual episode of misfortune for the New York Jets, and it has brought up some burning questions for next year.
It was supposed to be the big turnaround their fans have been hoping for over the years, but when Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on their first offensive series of the season, it was clear the hope for a big turnaround was merely a mirage.
Head coach Robert Saleh has had to make sense of all the team’s issues, and it is reported that he will return next year.
But amidst all the Jets’ late-season struggles ever since he took over as head coach, Nick Wright said on Fox Sports 1’s “First Things First” that bringing Saleh back would be “unprecedented,” given that coaches in a similar situation have almost always gotten fired at the conclusion of the year.
“First of all, he ends every year in shambles. This is now officially, his third consecutive double-digit loss season,” Wright said.

While the Jets are 6-10 on the season, Saleh was dealt a bad hand from the start with Rodgers’ injury, the poor play of his replacement quarterbacks, and a very substandard offensive line.
On the other hand, New York’s defense, which was fourth in points and yards allowed last year, has underperformed this season.
Running back Dalvin Cook, who had made the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons, only has 214 rushing yards in 15 games this season, and the team is last in rushing touchdowns in 2023.
Fixing the Jets and making them a very competitive team won’t be as easy as Rodgers returning to action or even finding a better head coach for the 2024 campaign.
