The Philadelphia 76ers have had a strong showing in free agency thus far, most notably highlighted by landing the biggest prize on the market in Paul George to a four-year max contract worth $212 million.

The George signing makes the Sixers legitimate championship contenders, but there’s another signing that most fans may have missed that one analyst believes was a great move.

Marc Jackson of NBC Sports is a big fan of the Sixers signing center Andre Drummond, saying “I love this signing, it was a no-brainer. If we had had Drummond last year right before the trade deadline cut off, I think we wouldn’t have hit the skid like we did when Joel Embiid was hurt.”

Jackson called Drummond a starter in this league who is only a backup because the center position has been undervalued and believes he is an ideal backup for Embiid, who is always at risk of missing time due to injury.

Drummond spent half a season as Embiid’s backup in 2021-22 and has transitioned into one of the most consistently reliable backup bigs in the league.

Last year with the Chicago Bulls, Drummond averaged 8.4 points and 9.0 rebounds a game in just 17.1 minutes a night while playing in 79 games.

He has feasted against backups over the last two years, averaging a career-high 18.8 rebounds per 36 minutes in the 2022-23 season before topping that with 18.9 last year.

Philly needs a good insurance policy in case Embiid gets hurt again, and landing Drummond for only two years and $10 million is a steal.
