Analyst Sends Spurs A Warning About Victor Wembanyama’s Supporting Cast

Rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama has lived up to the massive hype surrounding him this season, and it seems like only a matter of time before he becomes one of the best players in the NBA, if not the best player in the game.

But his San Antonio Spurs have the worst record in the Western Conference, and his supporting cast has been pretty awful this year.

Jason Timpf said, via The Volume, that given how quickly Wembanyama may develop, the Spurs will need to make “some type of all-in move for an All-Star in their prime sooner than later.”

Timpf mentioned Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young as a trade option, but he’s a risky one — he shoots a low percentage from the field and is turnover-prone and a defensive liability, and above all, he would be expensive.

Wembanyama is already a very good, All-Star-caliber player, and he’s averaging 21.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and an NBA-high 3.5 blocked shots per game.

In just the last week or so, he had a 40-point, 20-rebound, seven-block game in a win over the New York Knicks, and he missed a quadruple-double by two assists and one block versus the defending world champion Denver Nuggets.

You can see it coming — he’s already a nightmare for the rest of the league, and it will only get worse.

One thing that makes Wembanyama unique is the fact that once he was drafted, he already said publicly that he wants to win a championship, which is verbiage that rarely comes out of a rookie.

But for that to happen, he will have to be paired with an All-Star and very capable role players, just because that’s what it has always taken for great players to win it all.

Perhaps the Spurs will end up with one of the top two or three picks in this year’s draft, but this year’s draft class is expected to be weak, and thus they may need to make that type of trade Timpf mentioned within a year or two.
