The San Francisco 49ers shocked many in the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick.

While there was significant buzz surrounding Lance and his rushing upside, there was an equal amount of unknowns with him.

He had only started 17 collegiate games, and given that it was at a small D1 school, there was plenty of cause for concern.

Still, the 49ers used significant draft capital on him.

After one year of mostly letting him sit behind Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers were ready to hand the offense to Lance in 2022.

He started two games last season, suffering an ankle injury in week two that sidelined him for the rest of the year.

Lance has been working to get back on the field in this year’s training camp, hoping to be the 49ers’ starter moving forward.

However, David Lombardi has reported that “the major concern for the 49ers remains Lance’s wildly spotty short game.”

Trey Lance’s best throw of today was his only completion, an intermediate crosser to Tay Martin.

But the major concern for the 49ers remains Lance’s wildly spotty short game. He threw one short attempt for Brayden Willis into the turf and another short throw behind Jordan Mason.…

This has been a common theme throughout training camp.

It appears that Lance has undergone a difficult time as of late, as he hasn’t been able to get his accuracy issues under control.

If he’s unable to get it together, it could be time for the 49ers to move on, naming Brock Purdy as the starter going forward.

Purdy, of course, was able to lead the 49ers to an NFC championship berth, doing great things on the field before suffering an injury of his own.

The 49ers’ training camp could provide significant drama as fans will continue to watch the quarterback situation unfold.
