For years, people have debated about the NBA Draft and how the league should do something to prevent teams from tanking.

They recently shook up the NBA Draft lottery odds so that the team with the worst record wouldn’t necessarily have the highest odds to land the No. 1 pick, and it has worked thus far.

However, NBA analyst Alan Hahn still believes the lottery is the absolute worst process in the sports industry right now.

Hahn pointed out that he can’t fathom how a billionaire business allows their best, most promising assets to be allocated based solely on fate and chance and urged the league to do something about it.

Nonetheless, there’s actually not so much you could do to fix that.

The league didn’t want to incentivize teams to throw their seasons away with three months left in the regular season.

The NBA Draft allows the league to keep the field somewhat level and provides balance by giving the least-competitive teams the most promising prospects; that makes sense on paper.

Of course, what’s good on paper isn’t always what’s good in reality, but the fact that the Detroit Pistons got the No. 5 pick despite having the worst record in the league actually sends the message the league intends to send: Don’t lose on purpose, it might not be worth it.

The system isn’t perfect by any means, but whatever keeps the teams from tanking should be better for the competitiveness of the league, the players, and ultimately, the fans.
