The New England Patriots had arguably the NFL’s worst wide receiver unit last season, with rookie sixth-round pick DeMario Douglas leading the position with 49 catches for 561 yards.
They did sign K.J. Osborn in free agency and still have a pair of disappointing veterans in Kendrick Bourne and JuJu Smith-Schuster, but one big media voice is already urging the team to go get the new biggest star who may have just hit the market.
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons took to Twitter today after Brandon Aiyuk reportedly requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, saying: “If Brandon Aiyuk actually requested a trade and the Pats don’t get him and extend him – with tons of 2024 cap space BTW – how will the Krafts then blame that massive mistake on Belichick?”
If Brandon Aiyuk actually requested a trade and the Pats don’t get him and extend him — with tons of 2024 cap space BTW — how will the Krafts then blame that massive mistake on Belichick? Such a high degree of difficulty but don’t count them out.

There is a lot of salt in that tweet from a scorned Patriots fan who just had to endure one of the worst wide receiver seasons in recent memory.
Fans are notably frustrated after having to sit through a year where backup running back Ezekiel Elliott led the team in receptions, so Aiyuk would be an immediate major upgrade after he posted over twice as many yards as any Patriots receiver last year with 1,342 on 75 catches to go along with seven touchdowns.
Aiyuk is heading into a contract year on his fifth-year option and is certainly seeking to cash in, as his production has increased in each of his four seasons in the league.
New England also has the No. 3 pick in the draft which will likely be used to bring in a rookie franchise quarterback.
Aiyuk would be a great welcoming gift for him.
